Let’s Talk Tea – ICHAI – Black Cardamom Chai | Review

Hey there Teacups! It’s time again for another Let’s Talk Tea post, this time around it features ICHAI’S Black Cardamom Chai. This is their ICHAI blend no.5 – ‘’A rich and Smokey chai with a deliciously smooth multi layered flavour. Exotic notes of black cardamom dominate in this opulent blend with green cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and star anise and they finest quality loose leaf black tea.’’ – ICHAI

Dry Leaves
Cardamom – Underlying Cinnamon – Malt – Savoury – Slightly Sweet – Honey
Ingredients: Black Pepper, Black Tea, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Star Anise Pieces. (V)

From the moment I opened the packet this tea was in I was hit with an aroma so strong that it almost took my breath away (not in a bad way) – For me this tea has the aroma of autumn it reminded me of bonfire night and crisp autumn mornings crushing through fallen leaves as you walk down the street. We always have cinnamon candles in our house around autumn and I think that’s why I link this to autumn mostly. I was surprise by how savoury this smelt to be honest as I’m used to chai having quite a sweet/spicy aroma, but I think the added black pepper just toned down that sweet note and made it much more of a bottom note. Overall the aroma of this blends dry leaves had me incredibly excited to taste it for the first time.

Tea Tasting Notes

You all know that while I love chai blends I can also be really pick with them so no matter what this blend was going to go under some sort of scrutiny from me after trying it for the first time. I loved the aroma of the dry leaves so when it came to tasting it I wanted to love it’s taste just as much. While I did enjoy this blend quite a bit there was just a little something missing from it for me, the spices were the forefront which is expect with a chai but with most they don’t overpower the notes of the black tea they pair perfectly with it and dance along side it.

With this blend I just didn’t get that the tea had so many different things to contend with that it was almost completely lost, there was a slight malt note towards the aftertaste, but you had to be looking for it to notice it. For me that is the only way in which this blend falls flat and all that needs to be done to fix that is for a strong more robust black tea to be used – doing that would balance everything out and round the blend of perfectly. It packs a flavourful punch though and would be perfect to make chai lattes with.

Overall Teacup Rating: 4 ½ /5
