Hey there Teacups! I back today with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Forest Witch Teas – Sailor Mars blend. If you’ve been reading my blog since at least the start of this year you’ll know that not too long ago I tried and reviewed their Sailor Moon blend and absolutely loved it (you can find that review here) and after loving that blend so much I couldn’t wait any longer to try another.

Their Sailor Mars blend is an oxidised oolong based blend with cinnamon and chocolatey notes. It smells a lot like carrot cake which is why I chose to try this one next before the other blends I have from Forest Witch Tea because I bloody love carrot cake and I’m yet to find a blend that smells just like it.Here’s what Mia the founder of Forest Witch Teas has to say about the blend on their website: Sailor Mars, Soldier of War, and the Guardian of Flame and Passion; Rei Hino’s tea is sure to fire you up. A chocolatey oolong provides a wonderful black tea base that blends well with sweet cinnamon and cream flavours. Safflower petals are sprinkled throughout, reminiscent of the sacred flames of the Shrine.

Ingredients: organic oolong tea, organic cinnamon, organic safflower, flavour (V)

Tea Tasting Notes

Most of you will know that black tea is my go to tea and normally I will reach for that over any other tea but in the last few months I’ve found myself reaching for oolong more and more each day, Considering I hardly used to reach for it at all that’s a big deal for me and as a result of that I couldn’t have been more excited to see an oolong based blend in the package that Forest Witch Teas sent me (if I wasn’t such a Sailor Moon fan girl I deffinelty would have tried this blend first). The oolong used for this blend is a oxidised oolong that is much closer to a black tea and as a result of that I decided to steep it for a little bit longer because I knew it could handle it and it paid of as the strength was pretty much perfect.

The description of this blend on The Forest Witch Teas website says its a chocolatey oolong blend with cinnamon and cream notes and while I got the cinnamon and cream notes from it, it’s reminds me more of carrot cake than anything else in both aroma and taste. Which isn’t a bad thing a at – It actually couldn’t have been more perfect for me as I’m a huge fan of carrot cake and I’ve never had a blend that has managed to pretty much perfectly replicate it’s flavour profile. I think the oolong used for the based of this blend was a perfect choice it pairs so well with the cinnamon and creates such a sweet yet delicate flavour that is absolutely beautiful. I think if a greener oolong had been used for this blend it would have been nowhere near as good and well-rounded as it is. The downside to using a more oxidised oolong is that afterward drinking it can leave your mouth a little bit dry but this one didn’t dry my mouth out much at all and in fact it’s actually super creamy and was so pleasant to drink. I would suggest steeping this for 3 minutes anymore than that and the oolong starts to get a little bit too vegetal and all the blends best qualities are lost because the vegetal note overpowers them. I think I will more than likely end up reaching for this blend over the sailor moon one, even though they are both great this one is just much more up my street and I’ll be buying so much more in the future.
