Hey there Teacups! I’m back today with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Ruby Lion Inc’s – Lions Crest blend. It’s a blend of Darjeeling, Assam and Ceylon with a hint of Bergamot. If you’ve been reading my blog for at least a month know you’ll know that I recently tried Ruby Lion Inc’s – Crossbones blend and I loved it so much that I finished a whole tin in around a week and a half, and because of how much I loved it I definitely went into this tasting session with very high expectations and I really hoped that this blend would be just as good as the pervious one I tried.Here’s what Ruby Lion Inc. have to say about his blend over on their website: “The legend that started it all. Ingredients: Darjeeling, Assam, Ceylon & Bergamot Oil.
Tea Tasting Notes
This blend was such a surprise for me a because when I read that it had Bergamot oil in I was expecting it to be really strong and when I opened the tin to find that I could hardly smell it at all I was really surprised but also quite happy. I have had enough Earl Grey’s that are strong and hard hitting and quite frankly they at becoming too much for me. So the fact that the black teas are the shining stars of this blend and the Bergamot is more of background note makes me very happy.
I was also surprised that the subtle floral undertone of the Ceylon and the unique muscatel and honey undertone of the Darjeeling were able to come through towards the back of the mouth despite them being blended with Assam which is so robust, strong, malty and woody that it normally will block notes like that out and overshadow a lot. Luckily, that wasn’t the case at all with this blend because it’s so perfectly balanced, it’s smooth and an absolute pleasure to drink. In terms of preparation suggestions I only have two, I recommend you only drink this on it’s own or with a dash of honey if you really find it isn’t naturally sweet enough for you. Don’t have this with milk because it’s perfectly balanced and milk would just drown it out. The Bergamot note is so subtle you wouldn’t taste it at all with milk added and you would also loose a lot of the best notes provided by the black tea. The Assam and Darjeeling provide a delicate enough honey like sweetness for me so I haven’t needed to add honey yet but I can understand why some people would choose to put it in.
It can be a little bit drying in the throat towards the end of the cup but that didn’t effect my overall enjoyment of the blend at all in, fact I almost expect it to be worse with the black teas that form the base of this blend. They can normally be very drying and I thought that pairing them all together would only amplify that but it seems as it it’s almost been completely cancelled out. All it all I have really enjoyed this blend! It’s great and I’ve mostly been drinking it in the mornings as it’s great to kick start a day with. I doubt it will be long at all before I finish the tin I have, and even though Ruby Lion Blends are based in California I think I’ll have to make an order and try some more of their amazing blends. Because I need to see if all of their other blends are as good as the two I’ve tried.
