Let’s Talk Tea | Bird & Blend – Ultra Violet Matcha | Review

Hey there Teacups… Happy Matcha Monday! For today’s post I’m going to be reviewing Bird & Blend’s – Ultra Violet Matcha. My very kind Tea Friend Becca from The Tea Library sent me a sample tin of this Matcha in one of our 2019 tea swaps because she knew I had wanted to try it for a long time and I’m so thankful that she parted with this little tin to allow me to be able to try it before buying a big tin for myself. Since being a kid I have always loved Parma Violets a Violet candy that we have here in the UK so when I first heard that Bird & Blend had created a Matcha that smelt and tasted like them I knew I had to try it.

Here’s what Bird & Blend have to say about this Matcha over on their website: ”One of the first floral matchas ever created. Inspired by Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Ultra Violet is a nod to our often requested Palma Violet + Purple Rain teas. Classic Matcha lovers will love this. This classy and elegant Matcha isn’t super sweet, you can still taste the Matcha with a floral hint.”

Ingredients: Japanese Matcha green tea, cardamom, lavender, natural flavouring granules.

Tea Tasting Notes

I didn’t know what to expect the ingredients in this Matcha to be but I’ll be honest I was surprised to see cardamom and lavender on there. I’m a huge fan of cardamom but lavender I’m a bit iffy with mostly because I think I’ve only ever had two tea blend in my life with lavender in that I actually enjoyed. Before trying this I was a little bit worried that that was going to be the case and that rather than this being violet it would be all lavender and I wouldn’t enjoy it but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This Matcha smells and tastes just like Parma Violet sweets and I love it this is definitely my favourite flavoured Matcha I have ever tried from Bird & Blend and as soon as my tea buying ban is over I’ll be buying a big tin of this to drink iced throughout the summer. The thing I love about Bird & Blend is that they are a UK company and they create blends that taste like things I love and I have had throughout my life, I think if I were from somewhere other than the UK a lot of their creativity would be lost on me.

Before going into this tasting session I asked the Bird & Blend team for advice on how to prepare it in the best way possible and they suggested simply having it iced and adding nothing into it considering it was my first time trying it so I took that advice and jumped straight into making it. I used 1 Matcha scoop and a half considering I would be adding ice and I needed to account for it ending up a little bit watered down. I prepared this hot in my Matcha bowl with my whisk and using 80°C water but not much as I wanted to make somewhat of at thick tea to account for the fact I would be adding ice and cold water to finish this drink off.

After whisking it and building quite a nice froth I then poured my Matcha into my glass over ice and then enjoyed to my hearts content. I took one sip and I couldn’t believe what I was tasting when I say this tastes like liquid Parma Violets I mean it is insane, Bird and Blend did such a great job with this. The cardamom comes through but its more in the aftertaste than anything else. Cold I can say I didn’t get much lavender from this but I imagine that If I had had this hot it would have been much stronger and so would the cardamom but I have to say this is one I will probably only drink iced or maybe as an iced latte because I love it prepared that way.

Overall Teacup Rating: 5/5

  1. […] 3) Ultra Violet Matcha – Brid & Blend | This matcha is in my top 5 for one very specific reason, the fact that it smells and tastes exactly like my mums favourite sweets, Parma Violets. For as long as I can remember she’s loved them and because she’s loved them for so long her love for them has passed on to me because they remind me of her. I’ve had this both hot and iced now and my favourite way to have this matcha is definitely on its own iced. Its very well balanced and the violet element deffinelty doesn’t overpower the matcha. I’m not sure what they added into this to make it taste exactly like candy but it does and I’m a huge fan of it. I just wish you could get this in a big in on their website if you could I deffinelty would have repurchased this by now. Its deffinelty one I would like to have in my collection time and time again.
