Let’s Talk Tea | Twist Tea – Pure Matcha | Review

Hey there Teacups, happy Matcha Monday! Today I’m back with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Twist Teas – Pure Matcha. This sample was very kindly gifted to me by Twist Teas in return for a review as part of my Let’s Talk Tea / Matcha Monday series. If you’re been reading my blog for a bit you’ll know that I loved the first flavoured Twist Tea Matcha that I tried so going into this tasting session I had high expectations as I was really excited to see what their pure (non flavoured) Matcha had to offer. As much as I enjoy flavoured Matcha, my love for Matcha lies in pure unflavoured Matcha because that’s what I started my Matcha journey with and unlike a lot of people I actually love it flavour profile just for what it is so I’m always at my happiest when I get to try & review a new (to me) unflavoured Matcha.RoundPhoto_Jun292020_154743

Here’s what Twist Teas have to say about this matcha over on their website: “Made with premium grade Japanese leaves, our matcha contains a host of super-nutrients said to help drinkers anti-oxidise, energise, concentrate, rejuvenate, stay calm and lose weight (As part of a balanced diet). It tastes great too! A cup of this premium grade matcha is equivalent to ten cups of Green Tea, because the leaves are ingested rather than discarded.RoundPhoto_Jun292020_154802

Tea Tasting Notes

For this tasting session (which I did over a few days) I tried this Matcha for ways. On it’s own (hot), on it own (iced), with just honey (hot) and with honey & milk (hot). Out of all the ways I have tried this Matcha so far I enjoyed it the most on it’s own with a little honey (hot) and as a latte (hot) with honey and milk. It’s a very smooth and creamy Matcha with strong vegetal notes and an ever so slight natural sweetness; there is a slight astringency to it but adding in just a little honey seems to be able to pretty much take that away completely. The vegetal notes were strong as they always are when it comes to Matcha but they were much more on the sweeter side than the savoury/umami side which is why I think this Matcha works best either with just a little honey (hot) or as a latte.

It’s natural creaminess means that this thrives when you use it to make lattes the extra layer of creaminess provided by the (soya) milk amplifies that creamy note so much. I would like to think that would be the same if I were to make an iced latte with this Matcha. But for me this is a Matcha that is meant to be had in hot drinks there is just something about it for me that thinks it just would’t work as well iced. It’s flavour profile for me just works much better in hot drink. Like I said I had this iced on it’s own and it was good but not as good as the hot cups I had. I think it’s flavour profile and it natural subtle sweetness and creaminess for me just works better in when it’s hot. The vegetals were a little too much for me when I had this on it’s own iced.

When I do prepare this Matcha no matter what I am going to make with it, I prepare it in my matcha bowl with a whisk and start off with 1 Matcha Scoop (half a teaspoon) of Matcha and only a small amount of water to create a smooth paste and then add in a little more water. I find you end up with a much smoother and more enjoyable cup in general if you prepare it this way. In preparing it this way I am also able to build a good sturdy thick froth that stands its ground until your very last sip. I expected it to dissipate when I added in additional things to it but that wasn’t the case at all. RoundPhoto_Jun292020_154846

This is a delicious Matcha and I would certainly repurchase this in the future. I have a matcha lattes every morning, mostly iced but every now and again I’ll make myself a hot one. This Matcha will come in really handy once it’s starts getting towards to autumn / winter months and its a lot cooler because you can’t beat a hot Matcha latte on a cold morning to get the day off to a good yet cosy start. So far I’ve had nothing but amazing experiences with all of the Matcha I have tried from Twist and I’d recommend them to all Matcha lovers out there. I can’t wait to see what new Matcha they come out with in the future and hopefully I’ll get to try them all.

Overall Teacup Rating: 5/5
