Stateside Steeps | Matcha Alternatives – Chocolate Dream Rooibos | Review

Hey there Teacups! I’m back today with another Stateside Steeps post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Matcha Alternative’s – Chocolate Dream Rooibos. You all know I’ve actually had great experiences with chocolate tea blends and tisanes this year so far, so going into this tasting session all I really wanted was to be able to add to that list of good experiences. I’ve had a little bit of a mixed bag of experiences with Matcha Alternative blends so far, I have enjoyed the rooibos used as the base but the added elements are either really well done or a little weak for my liking so I didn’t know what to expect from the chocolate side of things going into this tasting session.

Tisane Tasting Notes

For this tasting session I tried this a few ways: On it’s own (hot), with just the addition of honey (hot) and then with both honey and milk added (hot). Out of all of the ways I tried this my favourite cup had to be the cup that had both honey and milk added. On it’s own the rooibos was by far the star which I don’t mind because I actually really enjoy the rooibos that Matcha Alternatives uses in their blends but the chocolate element wasn’t strong enjoy for me, it was present but a little lack lustre and didn’t stand it’s ground very well against the rooibos. However, I did try a cup of this on it’s own again and I did find if you steep this for as long as you possibly can it does get quite a bit more prominent.

Also I did find that once I added a little bit of honey in it sweetened those chocolate notes a little bit in both cups which did help to bring it forward a bit. I deffinelty would have liked more chocolate from this though. Maybe a few different cocoa notes in this could have been good and would have given it a little more of a chocolate boost. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy those cups, because I really did the rooibos Matcha Alternatives use in their blends is beautiful and I always enjoy drinking it, which is never something you would normally hear me say about rooibos. Even though I’ve only tried a few blend from them it’s definitely helped me learn to love rooibos.

The cup of this I had with milk I steep for a long time around 10-15 minutes (in a double walled cup to retain the heat) and then added heated frothed milk to it. In that cup the chocolate notes seemed to come through much more and stood their ground not only again the rooibos and it’s natural woody, earthy and nutty notes but also against the milk. It definitely take a little longer to prepare it this way but it pays off in the form of an absolutely delicious rooibos latte for the perfect after dinner treat.

Since doing my initial tasting session with this blend I have found that I enjoy this on it’s own and with just honey added, if I add in some extra cacao and give that chocolate a little more oomph. It’s definitely been and easy fix for me that mean I can enjoy this without having to steep it for extra time but it might not be something everyone out there can do as not everyone just has extra cacao in their cupboards. I would definitely recommend that Matcha Alternatives consider adding in at least one other cacao element to give that area a bit more of a boost so it can be enjoyed on it’s own or with just honey added for those who don’t like milk in their hot beverages.
