Stateside Steeps | Call Me Sweetea – Headless Horseman | Review

Hey there Teacups! I hope you all had a fantastic Halloween, I’m back today with another Stateside Steeps post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Call Me Sweetea’s – Headless Horseman blend. I had originally planned to post this review of Halloween night but sadly a migraine got in the way and I just couldn’t work on it so I thought I’d post it today instead before we get too far into November and closer to Christmas, today still counts and a spooky day right?

Here’s what Call Me Sweetea themselves have to say about this blend over on their website: “…this legendary superstition, which has furnished materials for many a wild story in that region of shadows; and the spectre is known at all the country firesides, by the name of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.” – The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.”

“Take a sip of this pumpkin spice blend to gather the courage to traipse through the graveyard at midnight and try your luck! Will the Headless Horseman hunt you down and haunt your soul or will you escape with your life tonight?”

Ingredients: Assam*, maple sugar, cassia chips*, cardamom*, cloves*, pumpkin spice flavouring (alcohol, water, spice extractives including cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and nutmeg), chai flavouring (water, alcohol, natural flavours) *indicates organic.

Tea Tasting Notes

For this tasting session I tried this tea three ways: on its own (hot), with just honey added (hot) and then finally with both honey and milk added (hot). Out of all of the different ways I tried this my favourite cup was definitely the one with both milk and honey added. On it’s own the robust Assam base is the perfect pedestal for the spices and it’s malty and woody qualities pair perfect with them all, especially the cardamom and the cinnamon. On it’s own this blend is a little clove heavy and past me would have hated this and not even given it a chance but over the years I’ve come to love blends with cloves in and this one was no different, in fact the fact that it is so clove heavy is one of my favourite things about it. You all know that I’m always looking for a loose leaf based chai that is spicy enough for me and this one definitely ticks that box. the best way to go when out comes to chai if you can if by far whole fresh spices but for a loose leaf blend this provides everything I could want on the spice front.

Originally going into this tasting session I wasn’t going to add any honey to this as this blend does contain maple sugar. But after trying this on it’s own and noticing that while I could pick that element out it wasn’t as strong as I thought it was going to be. I was instantly worried that it was going to be too much sweetness but it comes across as quite a natural note and adds more of a underlying maple note rather then an overwhelming sweetness. I was interested to see who the addition of a little honey would not only effect that element but the blend as a whole so I decide to give it a go for this tasting session and see what the results were.

The addition of just a teaspoon of honey not only softened the stronger spice elements a slight bit but also upped the sweetness of the blend overall which took away the slight astringency of the Assam base and gave the subtler spices time to shone and definitely transformed it into a little more of a well-balanced (to my particular taste) blend. I could definitely drink this with just honey many more times in the future especially when I’m not looking to add milk and it’s heaviness into a spicy blend.

Like I said though my favourite way to have this is by far with both milk and honey added. The great thing about how prominent the spices are in this is that they stand their ground so well against the addition of milk and are only softened slightly once it is added in. For me because I’m so used to drinking spicy fall blends like this with milk and honey as my default I think somewhere in my mind I knew before I even took a sip of this that I was going to enjoy it prepared this way the most. The addition of just a little bit of milk also adds a little bit of indulgency too it. I’m yet to make it as a fully fledged latte but I think it would work perfectly and I’ll definelty try before I finish the bag I have. I have no doubt in my mind that this would be a blend I would purchase time and time again in the future.
