Stateside Steeps | California Tea House – Violet Moon (Blooming Tea) | Review

Hey Teacups! I’m back today with a new Stateside Steeps review and this time around I’m going to be reviewing The California Tea House’s – Violet Moon (Blooming Tea). I’ve tried a few teas so far from the California Tea House and I’ve had pleasant experiences with all of them really, so I’ve been excited to do this tea tasting session for a while now and see if this last tea from them would live up to the expectations I had for it. I personally love blooming teas but it’s been quite a while since I had my last one; they are such a great experience and so aesthetically pleasing. This one I was especially interested in because of it’s use of violet flowers which I have never seen used in a blooming tea before.

Here’s what the California Tea House have to say about this blooming tea over on their website: ”Violet Moon Blooming Tea is our newest flowering tea. A romantic display of Silver Needle white tea and a bold Violet bloom. Blooming teas make a perfect wedding favour and party gift. Email us for information about private labelling for a personal touch on wedding gift tea blooms. To prepare your tea bloom, bring a pot of mineral water to a boil and pour into a clear pot, vase or large glass. Drop a single hand made blooming tea ball into the hot water and let steep for 4 to 6 minutes until the flower blooms. Once the tea has fully bloomed the tea is ready to drink.”

Tea Tasting Notes

For this tasting session I used my glass kyusu and freshly filtered water steeped to 85°C. I chose to steep it at a white tea temp as to make sure there was no way the white tea was able to get bitter. I don’t normally drink too much white tea either so I wanted to make sure I made no mistakes with the preparation as I have done that before and it’s always ended in really bad heartburn which is why I never usual take the chance with white tea and pretty much only drink it cold brewed. After brewing this one hot in my kyusu for this tasting session, I also brewed it into my cold brew jug and steep it a second time over night. I definitely thought that I was going to enjoy the cold brew version more, but this particular tea works much better hot and not only did I enjoy it hot which surprised me but it also didn’t give me heart burn, which is a huge thing for me and white tea and never usually happens.

Okay so the hot cups of this tea that I had, what did they taste like? Well the white tea was definitely the star. Although it’s overall a light tea, it provided a lot of the overall flavour profile with its added floral notes reminiscent of wildflowers, a subtle honey sweetness and a undertone of juicy citrus. In most blooming teas the base tea is not as prominent as it was with this and you can never usually really taste what the blooms in the centre add but with this one you can definitely pick out the violet and it takes this blooming tea to a whole new level.

The violet bloom adds another layer of floral to this flavour profile with that classic violet taste and its own naturally sweetness, both of which work perfectly with the white tea. I would honestly have to say that this is the best blooming tea that I have ever had the pleasure of trying. Compared to others this one is miles ahead and you can tell it’s been well thought out, the flower in the centre actually adds something to it rather than just adding a novelty. The cold brewed version of this I had was much more white tea than violet but as it had already been steeped before on the whole it was a much lighter experience, but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. I definitely would have loved for the violet to be more present in the cold version but I suppose it would have been if I hadn’t have hot steeped this tea before hand.

As I’m sure none of you will be shocked to hear. I would definitely purchase this again and honestly if I could only purchase one booming tea again this would be it, because like I said it’s without a shadow of a doubt the best blooming tea I’ve had and I would like to continue to have this as part of my collection. If you’re already a fan of blooming teas and you want to experience them on a whole new level I highly recommend trying out this tea, I promise you that you will not regret it.

Overall Teacup Rating: 5/5
