Hey there Teacups.. Happy Matcha Monday! I’m back today with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Twist Teas – Cocoa Matcha. They very kindly gifted me this Matcha along side some of their other Flavoured & unflavoured matchas to try out and review for you all for coming matcha Mondays. With Easter coming I know that people who aren’t a huge fan of chocolate will be looking for alternative things to enjoy throughout the Easter period. So why not start my Twist Teas Matcha review with their cocoa matcha that would be the perfect thing to replace chocolate throughout the Easter weekend.
Here’s what Twist Teas themselves have to say about this Matcha over on their website: Made with premium grade Japanese leaves, our matcha contains a host of super nutrients said to help drinkers antioxidise, energise, concentrate, rejuvenate, stay calm and lose weight (as part of a healthy lifestyle). Ingredients: Japanese Matcha Green Tea (43%), Raw Cocoa (30%), Cocoa Powder (20%), Natural Flavouring.
Tea Tasting Notes
The dry aroma of this matcha honestly smells like Galaxy (Dove in the US) chocolate and I’ll be honest I wasn’t expecting that at all, the cocoa matchas I’ve had in the past have never really had such strong chocolate aromas/notes and were rather subtle when It came to the chocolate elements but this one was different. That aroma was only amplified when I added in the water and started to whisk this matcha the addition of the water made it smell just like I had just melted so much chocolate in my kitchen and it honestly made my mouth water.
With such strong chocolate aromas I expected the cocoa elements to overpower the matcha completely but that wasn’t the case at all, which this matchas top note is deffinelty milk chocolate there is also quite a vegetal underpinning to and they pair perfectly together. Would I have liked the matcha to be tiny bit more present yes I would but honestly that’s just my personal preference and this is still a delicious and well balanced matcha.
For this tasting session I tried this blend three ways I tried it on its own first, then I added a teaspoon of honey and then I added in frothed milk and tried it as a latte. On it’s own the chocolate notes were a just a little bit dark for me, they were bitter like dark chocolate but deffinelty stronger than milk chocolate. The matcha was able to come through a little bit when I had it on its own but it wasn’t as strong of a note as I would have liked it to be.
However adding a little bit of honey sweetened those chocolate notes a little bit and in turn made it taste a little but more like milk chocolate which was much more my cup of tea. In sweetening those chocolate notes the matcha was able to come through a little more which was much more enjoyable for me. If I was going to have this on its own going forward and not as a latte I’ll deffinelty make sure I remember to add in just a little bit of honey.
The way in which this Matcha truly shines however is when it is used to make a latte with just a little bit of honey and some hot/frothed soya milk. Like I said the addition of the honey makes the chocolate notes much more milk chocolatey and the addition of the milk just amplified that tenfold. It made this feel so much more indulgent and gave it a creamy mouthfeel which it was missing before. Making it feel like I had just made a latte with a cup full of melted chocolate. I would suggest however when it comes to making lattes with this to use a little more of the matcha than you would when making a latte with normal matcha to make sure it can stand its ground against the addition of so much milk.
I can deffinelty see myself reaching for this when I’m craving a sweet treat especially because I can’t go out of the house and just pick up stuff to make sweet treats right now. I can see the tin & sample I have of this particular matcha lasting me a while. However if I do run out Twist Teas are still shipping like normal and this Matcha is 100% worth breaking my tea buying ban for.
